The St. Mary’s Catholic School Spanish curriculum is based on the Michigan World Languages Curriculum which consists of communication, culture, connections, comparisons, and communities. The Spanish curriculum includes scheduled weekly instruction designed in collaboration with each grade level, integrating relevant project approach work whenever possible.

The goals of the Spanish program are:

  • to learn basic words and phrases in Spanish

  • to develop an interest in foreign language for future study

  • to develop critical listening skills in Spanish

  • to develop cultural awareness, appreciation, and understanding of the Spanish language and culture

  • to develop linguistic awareness

  • to acquire age appropriate proficiencies in reading and writing in Spanish

  • to acquire proficiency in listening and speaking

Students learn Spanish through visuals, songs, games, and stories. Receptive language and expressive language are practiced during each class session.  Listening, speaking, reading, and writing are primary focus of the curriculum.  Students are assessed on their communicative proficiencies through demonstration of their knowledge in a meaningful context.
